Was the Dutch East India Company really an empire ?

The Dutch East India Company ( DEIC) though it did not fit the definition of an empire, ruled much like a sovereign power and through its significant trade with the Indies the DEIC helped create a Dutch centre of power by the time it was declared bankrupt in 1799 and the Dutch government took over. The DEIC affected everything from trade , economics, politics through its motivations, methods of control and colonisation. This in effect had created a Dutch Colony which contains elements of Dutch control stemming from the colonisation and subsequently addressing the question was the Dutch East Indian Company really an empire or was it just a centre of control ?

This question will be answered by looking at:

  • What is the definition of an empire ?
  • What was the motivation for Colonisation ?
  • How were methods of colonisation and control used ?
  • How the natives were treated during the reign of DEIC ?
  • What were the economic effects caused by the DEIC ?
  • What were the effects from the DEIC?
